Lessons from Lola : Horse Photography 101

Here is what I have learned about photographing horses so far.....

I anticipated that there would be moments that mirror photographing small children. For example, when either are feeling disagreeable, you let them do their thing for a bit. There is zero value in trying to force a 900lb animal or a toddler on the verge of a breakdown into doing anything. Find them a snack, coo some soothing words, share a hug, rely on bribery….then you regroup and try again.

And yes, we had those moments.

I discovered how sassy they can be!

Horses who do not like each other will talk smack. One throws an insult and the other responses. Physically and verbally.

Very entertaining. Slightly frightening.

Swift separation of the foes is encouraged.

Horses are silly and affectionate. They have personalities as large as they are and tend to love attention.

They also give off clear body language. Take note of the eyes and the ears - they speak volumes.

But here is my best take away. These enormous beauties are graceful and powerful and ENCHANTING.

I can count on one hand how many times I have been on a horse, but I am intrigued and respectful of how magnificent they are.

I am sure that I could get lost snapping photos of these creatures for hours upon hours. I've had a taste of what it takes to capture the action shots as well as the portraits, and it's all quite addicting. And certainly not easy. Constant attention is required because each moment provides a different look, stride, angle or flex of muscle. As I mentioned earlier, horses and toddlers fall into the same category - be prepared and you MAY get that perfect shot.

And let's not forget to talk about the beauty who leads Lola - Miss Taylor. There is a very special bond between here. Taylor's confidence is admirable and her ability to handle such a creature is impressive. She has put in many hours in at the barn and in the arena building a trusting relationship. It will be a joy to continue to work with this duo and well as Taylor and Patti (below).

I'm getting better at setting goals and building my skill set as I get older. I'm inspired by people like Taylor. I am less scared of failing and more scared of not trying. Building my experience in equine photography is now on my list - I just need to put myself out there. I may even find myself up on one of these horses eventually, but for now I'll enjoy them with my feet planted in the dirt and a camera in my hands.
